Sometimes, luck is everything.
Take today, for example. I joined hundreds if not thousands of other authors hoping for literary representation in a superstar competition from The Knight Agency called Speed Date 2.
The basic premise: from 12:00 – 1:00 pm today, enter your name in the comments section so that it can be pulled at random to be one of 125 contestants. From there, the game’s afoot and by March 28 the list will be whittled down and down and down until, finally, there’s a winner.
At 12:03, I was number 132. At 12:46, there have been 403 comments posted … which we can assume means 403 entrants.

Luck takes center stage today in the first round, when 125 names will be drawn at random from the legions entering. If I make that cut, then I submit the first three pages of my manuscript, Mine By Design, by tomorrow.
From there, skill and talent take over. The 125 contestants send in the first three pages of their manuscripts by March 8. Then on March 10, 25 entrants advancing to round two submit the first ten pages of their manuscripts. By March 14 the list will be culled down to 15 entrants, who send the first three chapters; then on to March 17 and the three finalists who submit the whole manuscript. The Grand Prize Winner will be announced on Monday, March 29.
So of course I’m rooting for myself, both in the luck of the draw today, and further throughout the month of March. But what a whirlwind competition. And what an agency to do something so fun and out of the ordinary. Some lucky, talented author may find themselves with a literary agent on April 1. And that’s no joke!
