You Wanna Come Over to Play Cornhole?

Um, no I do not, thank you very much.

Well …

I was appalled when a neighbor asked me to play cornhole a couple of months ago. That’s, um, advanced know what I mean? But I will admit to a healthy curiosity once I got over the shock.

Turns out ‘cornhole’ is what some folks are calling ‘bean bag toss.’ Did you ever play that as a child? I did. The ‘bean bag toss’ version.

But here in my fine southern neighborhood, the neighbors are crazy for cornhole. I can’t say it or type it, or discuss it without giggling. And most people know what I’m giggling about, while others … don’t. Which is what brings my thoughts to this topic today.

My next door neighbor, with whom we get along famously, is older and a bona-fide Boston Irish Catholic, bless her heart. Yesterday we were talking about our “party house” neighbors, who play cornhole on the sidewalk every Friday and Saturday night and are, of course, the height of fashion and, uh, class. I giggled each time she said ‘cornhole,’ and she wanted to know why.

Well, you know I write sexy contemporary romances, right? And that I worked for years in HIV/AIDS education–where we had bowl-fulls of female and male condoms and portable packets of lubrication, right? And I can generally talk about ANYthing under the sun without blushing. But this did it.

Explaining why I was so crudely giggling at my gentle, kind, faithful neighbor’s voicing of the game ‘cornhole’ made me bend over at the waist and howl with laughter. The harder I laughed, the more she blushed and stammered, which in turn made me laugh even more.

Oh, my God, I’m laughing now.

  • Have you ever misinterpreted someone’s invitation?
    What was it?

PS. Google images for ‘cornhole’ at your own risk. Sheesh.
